Macedonia’s Prime Minister and conservative VMRO DPMNE party leader Nikola Gruevski is the most popular politician in the country, while the party’s candidate for president, Georgi Ivanov tops the list of presidential candidates, the latest opinion poll shows.
Gruevski enjoys the trust of 31 per cent of respondents according to the March survey done by the local NGO Institute for Democracy. He is followed by the ruling Democratic Party for Integration, DUI head Ali Ahmeti and the outgoing President Branko Crvenkovski both scoring 8.5 per cent, the state MIA news agency said on Monday.
A high 25 per cent of the respondents said they do not favour any politician.
Among the political parties, VMRO DPMNE again has a firm lead with 29.9 per cent saying they would vote for the party, and the Social Democrats attracting a 13.6 per cent approval. VMRO’s government partner, DUI has a 8.7 per cent popularity while the newly formed New Democracy party has a ratings of 6.4 per cent. Nearly twenty per cent of the respondents said they did not favour any party.
VMRO-DPMNE’s Gjorge Ivanov leads among presidential candidates with 25.4 per cent of support, followed by Ljubomir Frckoski of the Social Democrats with 12.7 per cent. Imer Selmani, the head of New Democracy with 12.6 per cent is a whisker away from securing the runner up position. If he makes it he would be the first ever ethnic Albanian candidate to enter the second round.
The independent candidate Ljube Boskoski has 7.4 per cent, Agron Buxhaku from the DUI enjoys 4.8 per cent, Nano Ruzin from the Liberal Democrats has 2.2 per cent and Mirushe Hoxha from the Democratic Party of Albanians enjoys 1.6 per cent, the poll shows.
