BUCHAREST -Romania Wednesday rejected accusations by Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin that it had played a role in the anti-Communist unrest that have shaken Chisinau.
“This accusation is a provocation aimed at the Romanian state,” Romania’s foreign ministry said in a statement issued shortly before Moldova told Bucharest’s ambassador in Chisinau to leave within 24 hours.
It was “unacceptable that the Communists in power in Chisinau shift the blame for internal problems in Moldova on to Romania and the Romanian people,” the statement added.
Voronin accused Romania Wednesday of involvement in violence that broke out Tuesday in the Moldovan capital in the of a Communist election victory.
“Romania is involved in the events,” he said, adding that Moldova would reintroduce a visa regime for Romanian national – a move that the Romanian foreign ministry called “unilateral” and “absurd.”
