Ghimpu appointed Moldova’s caretaker president

MOLDOVA

Parliament speaker Mihai Ghimpu is to serve as Moldova’s ad interim president, under a decision adopted Friday by the legislature, following prolonged debates.

The decision is to be submitted to the Constitutional Court for validation.

Communist MP Vladimir Turcan suggested the adoption of the decision should be postponed until the next meeting, after the Constitutional Court will have pronounced its verdict.

The representatives of the ruling Alliance for European Integration insisted that a caretaker president should be appointed with no delay after the post was declared vacant.

Vladimir Voronin resigned formally from the post of president this morning to occupy the seat of member of parliament.
