The Swedish EU presidency presumes the Republic of Moldova may be admitted to the European Union even before Western Balkan states, Moldova’s Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu stated to the press after his meeting with the First Deputy Speaker of the Riksdag parliament] of Sweden, Jan Bjorkman.
Ghimpu said, Sweden stands for European Union enlargement, and speaks for admitting Moldova to the European family of nations.
“Sweden is calling upon us to efficiently implement Eastern Partnership projects as an essential stage of preparation to integration into Europe, and has hinted that Moldova should not strive for the Western Balkan package but, instead, should work to accede to the European Union independently and even before the Western Balkan countries”, Ghimpu said.
In his words, Swedish officials are optimistic about visa-free traveling of Moldova citizens to European Union member countries.
The EU-Moldova Cooperation Council is going to convene on December 21 to start negotiations on visa regime liberalization for this republic.
