Germany favors a phase-in Schengen entry for Romania and Bulgaria

A phased-in Schengen entry is still a possibility for Romania, even though not all Schengen member countries would be ready for a decision like that, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stated.

“As far as Schengen is concerned, Germany and France proposed a plan consisting of several stages, which Romania also accepted,” Merkel reminded on Thursday during a joint press conference with Romanian President Traian Basescu in Berlin.

Under the phased-in Schengen accession compromise, Bulgaria and Romania would initially have barriers at airports and maritime ports removed, while maintaining land restrictions.
