Nikolic Honours Serbia’s Foreign Friends

Serbia’s President has rewarded sympathetic international public figures with special merits as part of celebrations ahead of Serbia’s Statehood Day on February 15.President Nikolic has bestowed the Sretenje medal, second class, on the US lawyer Ramsey Clark for his public and humanitarian work, according to the latest Official Gazette.

Clark opposed the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia and supported the regime of Serbia’s late strongman, Slobodan Milosevic.

Clark is one out of many rewarded with honours as part of celebrations to mark Serbia’s Statehood Day on February 15.

Statehood Day commemorates both the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottomans in 1804 and the First Serbian Constitution in 1835.

For special contribution to the development and strengthening of friendship between Serbia and France, Nikolic decorated Patrick Besson with the Order of the Serbian flag, third class.

Besson is a French writer and winner of many prestigious literary awards, many of whose works have been translated into Serbian. He is known as a great supporter of the Serbian side during the wars in the former Yugoslavia.

Nikolic also awarded Radoslav Zelenovic, director of the Serbian cinematheque, for special merits in the field of cinema and the Institute of Physics for outstanding merit.

Nikolic’s Gold Medal for distinguished service went to 65, and the Silver Medal to 75 members of the country’s Defence Ministry and the Serbian Armed Forces.
