Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili is surprised at inconsistency of the Tagliavini Commission. Recognizing the presence of Russia’s regular troops in the Georgian territory, particularly in the Tskhinvali region, the commission still did not name Russia as the aggressor, Saakashvili added.
“The Commission recognized that the foreign country’s armed forces have entered our territory. But, the commission did not name this country as the aggressor. How we were supposed to do, when our citizens were in danger and enemies invaded our territory. We were forced to defend people,” the president said.
Saakashvili asked the authorities of France and Germany, how they would do if the enemy invaded their territory. “When the Spanish naval armada has been approaching the coast of England, the Englishmen opened fire first. Does it mean that the Englishmen started the war? One standard should be applied for all. It won’t do to apply one for the Europeans, another for others,” Saakashvili stated.
Saakashvili said that “Georgians are proud people and they are not going to give their territory anyone.” “We have defended our country and any reference to the fact that we commenced the war is unacceptable. Before we began shelling Tskhinvali, our country has undergone aggression. Enemy guns were firing to our territories as the commission evidenced,” Saakashvili said.
Georgia’s president expressed his surprise at the fact that part of the Georgian opposition politicians said that Tbilisi is guilty of commencing the war. “These statements are irresponsible and false, and they, if they are patriots, must see the truth, the truth that is reflected in the documentary and factual part of the commission’s work,” -Saakasvili added.
