Iran’s embassy in Athens in a statement released on Saturday condemned trespassing of Iran’s territorial waters by the British troops, reiterating that the responsibility of the measure lies on the British government. “Considering Article 30 of the International Law Commission about the international responsibilities of governments, the British government is responsible (for the trespassing of Iran’s borders by the British marines),” the statement stressed, viewing the statements made by the British officials as indications of irresponsibility.
The statement also described trespassing by the British vessels on Iran’s territorial waters as a suspicious action in blatant violation of the international rules and regulations and in contradiction with the international undertakings of the British government, and further condemned the action.
It said that whenever borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran have been trespassed, Tehran has strove to show self restraint and treated the issue within the framework of bilateral ties, but repeated violation of Iran’s sovereignty by the British troops since the detention of the British military troops in June 2004 due to their trespassing on Iran’s waters, the irrational statements made by the British officials are illustrative of the fact that London is pursuing irresponsible intentions.
The statement reminded that according to Article 30 of the International Law Commission on the international responsibilities of governments, the British government is responsible to avoid such measures which are in contradiction with the rules of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the international laws.
Instead of accepting its international responsibility, Britain is trying to project its responsibility and raise unreal issues in a bid to drop its responsibility. But registered data and information in the Global Positioning System (GPS) taken from the detainees along with the explicit confessions made by the British sailors during their interviews all prove the truthfulness of Iran’s claims that the British troops have entered Iran’s territorial waters illegally and without permission, the statement further added.
It also mentioned that Iran is studying the possibility for arranging a meeting between the British consulate and the detained marines as a humanitarian measure and in line with the consulate laws, stressing that Tehran believes the problem is a bilateral issue which could be solved if the British officials show the required willingness.
Iran believes that any interference in the issue by the third parties would complicate solution of the issue, the statement underscored.
