Egypt is to play host to Palestinian factions on Sunday, in a bid to cement a fragile ceasefire between President Mahmud Abbas’s Fatah group and the Islamist Hamas group, the official MENA agency reported.
“Egyptian talks with the Palestinian leaders will begin Sunday in Cairo as part of Egypt’s intensive efforts to stabilise the truce and end Palestinian infighting,” the MENA reported quoting informed Egyptian sources.
Supporters of Hamas and Fatah, which share power in the Palestinian government, clashed for several days in the Gaza Strip before reaching a ceasefire on May 16. The clashes resulted in more than 40 deaths in less than one week.
Cairo will hold separate meetings with the factional representatives. “There is no intention to hold a meeting bringing all the factions around one table,” MENA reported.
The Egyptian delegation, headed by General Borhan Hamad, will meet with representatives of Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
