Bulgaria would support any compromise in Macedonia’s name dispute

Bulgarian president Georgi Purvanov said that Bulgaria would support any compromise in Macedonia’s name dispute but the search for a “geographic” name – acceptable to all sides – might cause tension in Bulgaria.

“I will give an an example of what’s been discussed recently. Names such as South or Upper Macedonia should be commented in the context that geographically, this territory is part of Bulgarian Pirin Macedonia. A question arises, what the Bulgarian population living in the area will say. But let our friends (Macedonia and Greece) find the common name. We, Bulgarians, will find a way to express our constructive position on the question,” Purvanov said.
