Kosovo Optimistic on ICJ Decisio

resizer21Kosovo is optimistic that it will win its case at the International Court of Justice, where the country’s declaration of independence is to be adjudicated following the official request made by Serbia in October, 2008.

Kosovo’s government declares that it has made all necessary preparations to submit its arguments in favour of its declaration of independence. Both Serbia and Kosovo are to deliver their respective arguments in mid-April.

Deputy Prime Minister Hajredin Kuci was confident of Kosovo’s ability to win the battle at the ICJ. “We have hired judges of international reputation to offer their arguments favouring the legality of Kosovo’s independence”, said Kuci.

According to him, “Kosovo’s declaration of independence is in accordance with International Law”.

The opposition is also optimistic that the ICJ decision will be in favour of Kosovo’s independence; however, according to them, this is not so much a tribute to the government’s preparation, but rather the attitude of international partners.

“The fact that the declaration of Kosovo’s independence has been supported by the most powerful states around the world is proof that international justice will be in favour of Kosovo”, said Ahmet Isufi, senior official of Kosovo’s main opposition party, the Alliance for Kosovo’s Future.

The UN General Assembly approved in October a resolution put forward by Serbia to seek an ICJ opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s independence. At the General Assembly, 77 states voted for the move and 6 voted against, while 74 countries abstained.

A decision by the ICJ is not binding, but has instead recommendation status.
