Greece’s new PM arrives in Turkey to attend SEECP meeting

Leader of Greek socialist party PASOK, Georgios Papandreou, who is the new Prime Minister of the country after winning the October 4 general elections, is to arrive Friday in Istanbul to take part in the informal meeting of the foreign ministers in the South East European Co-operation Process (SEECP).

Papandreou has also the functions of Greece’s Foreign Minister. Thus, the first international visit of the new Greek Prime Minister will be in Turkey, no matter that he will attend an international forum.

During his visit to Turkey, Papandreou will meet with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
Papandreou’s visit to Turkey is regarded as a signal for softening the tension between the two countries and it is considered to be of great importance.
Papandreou backs Turkey’s accession to the European Union if the country meets all requirements. The same position was held by Papandreou’s political rival Kostas Karamanlis.
